Narration of the incident (Direct Quotation):

“Quote” “ My name is Alasey Ali Mohamed. I was married to my cousin in Celow village in Warsheikh District of Middle Shabelle Region. Once upon a time, I went for a traditional night gathering in Celow village and when I came back home at midnight from the gathering, my husband has beaten me up. On the same night, I have run away in anger from my house and went to my parent’s house. On the following day, there was mediation and reconciliation organized by both relatives in which my husband apologized. Following his apology, I was convinced to go back to my house.

Upon my arrival back to my house, my husband has scolded me and has beaten me once again. He has also threatened that he would kill me if I leave my house out once again.

On the following day, because of disappointment and anger over the repeated incident of beating, I  lost self-control and could  not restrain myself. Therefore, I  decided  to burn down my husband’s hut and I did so by burning the hut down into ashes. The, I run away and went back to my parents house.

After several days, mediation and reconciliation meeting was again organized by both relatives. In the meeting, it was decided that we (my husband & myself) have to forgive each other and that the burnt hut would be rebuilt by his father (my father in- law). After some days, the hit was rebuilt and I went back to my new hut to live in. One night as I was sleeping on my bed during midnight of 26/06/2001, I woke up to find myself tied up with rope on my bed. Then, I asked my husband who was sleeping beside me “ who has tied me up with this rope?”. He replied that he had tied me up and that tonight I would lose both the very hands with which  I used to burn his hut. Then, he took up a big knife and chopped both my hands off. The following day, I was admitted to Kaysaney Hospital in Mogadishu for treatment. When I got recovered and discharged from the Hospital, I requested my husband (the perpetrator) through my parents to divorce me. Which was finally done.

Now, I live in Celow village in Warsheikh District, Somalia without both hands off.  Alas!

COGWO has done the following activities to deal with this case:-

1. Medical Remedy:

A)   COGWO has visited the victim at Kaysaney Hospital in Mogadishu to see her condition. COGWO has conducted an interview with both the victim and her father at the Hospital and took photo of the victim.

B)   COGWO has had a meeting with the admin. section of the Hospital to discuss about how the victim could be helped. They suggested that it would be better for the victim to be taken abroad for artificial hands. The admin. Section of Kaysaney Hospital promised that they would provide medicine to the victim and suggested that COGWO should pay the hospital fee of the victim as well as feeding cost which we have accepted.

The case of the victim is pending and the victim is still under control of and being taken care of by COGWO documentation centre.

2.Legal:

COGWO has recorded her case as No 42 of domestic violence, a separate file was opened for the case with all data and her photo as well as witnesses.

3.. Counseling:

COGWO has offered individual trauma counseling to the victim to relief her from torment and pain.

COGWO Recommendation:

COGWO Documentation Centre would highly recommend for the victim to be taken abroad for treatment since the Medical Doctor who made the diagnosis of the case confirmed that the case can not be treated in Somalia and thus  prescribed her to be treated outside the country and to be provided with artificial hands
